# Mathematics is not just for solving for x but for figuring out y!! The magic of numbers.

When you get that question of “have we got a fun lesson today?” or “Can we watch a video?”, then play this video!! This is a brilliant video showing the magic of Fibonacci numbers.

Mathematics is logical, functional and just simply awesome. Mathemagician Arthur Benjamin, an inspiration for the magical maths website, explores hidden properties of that weird and wonderful set of numbers, the Fibonacci series, and reminds you that mathematics can be so inspiring.

Mathematics is not just for solving for x but for figuring out y!!

I did several lessons with my year 6 class based on the beauty of Fibonacci numbers – children found them in nature and drew beautiful spirals of their own. We went on to drawing Archimedean spirals and, during an Ofsted inspection I asked the children to calculate the area of an Archimedean spiral within a square of a specified size. The inspector said he thought it was not challenging enough for the children as they should have been able to find the area of squares in year 6. He had entirely missed the point of the sequence of lessons which the children had all thoroughly enjoyed and from which they had learnt a great deal. I have subsequently resigned.
