Are you ready to rock?

At school, I can honestly say the subject I dreaded most was always maths, fearing those square ruled pages and an hour of “if X = 1, Y must = ????”.  Now, 20 years later, I find myself extolling the importance of maths in everyday life to anyone that will listen as a Programme Manager at the Transformation Trust, a schools charity working with 1,300 state secondaries, providing aspiration raising opportunities to young people, typically from low income families.

The Transformation Trust has been working with Nationwide Building Society and an Advanced Skills Teacher in Maths to develop and deliver an engaging maths programme for year 7 students to demonstrate how a range of maths techniques from across the curriculum can be crucial in the fast paced, high energy, glamorous world of event management.

The programme

Students are tasked with planning a large-scale pop concert, organising everything from understanding survey data to select the most popular acts,  budgeting for ticket prices and estimating how many hot dogs they will sell and scheduling acts, through to thinking about lighting angles and stage block dimensions.

Students also have to work as a team and keep an eye on their time management to put together a successful show.

This is problem solving at its best – you might even say this is maths by stealth, with students who have taken part so far commenting that “it was fun, but it wasn’t maths!”

Ah-ha, success I hear you cry!

How you can get involved

With the programme beginning its second year in September, we want Rock Club to be bigger and even better.  We have made Events Planners out of 10,000 students so far and want to reach a further 20,000 before next summer.

If you are interested in delivering these FREE resources to your students in the coming academic year, over 12 lessons or as a holiday/after school club project, please drop me a note here.

Teachers delivering the resources will also be entered into a prize draw for 100 tickets to Rock Assembly, our own end of term pop concert for 10,000 students on 14 July 2016 at Wembley Arena.

Finally, we’re looking for inspiring maths teachers who are seeking a new challenge, to deliver the programme as a full day facilitated workshop to groups of 100 students across the country.  Please leave me a note to learn more.
