# Facebook Math Problem: Bodmas Starter 5 + 5 + 5 – 5 + 5 + 5 – 5 + 5 x 0 = ? (I Bet More People Will Answer It Wrong:P) Give A Try !!

**Facebook Math Problem**

This is the classic Facebook Math problem that has gone viral and has been perplexing thousands. After studying it and coming up with a few difference answers I actually realised that this was a good starter or plenary for a BODMAS/BIDMAS lesson.

The Facebook Math question itself is very simple problem and the answer to the problem can be found below. The Math problem has been shared on many social networking sites, and I think the “I bet more people will answer it wrong” drives people to try and answer it and eventually get a little perplexed.

**5 + 5 + 5 – 5 + 5 + 5 – 5 + 5 x 0 = ? “(I Bet More People Will Answer It Wrong:P) Give A Try !!”**

Take a look at the answers below or have a look at the guest blog explaining the answer.

**a) Answer = -5**

**B**rackets **O**rder **D**ivision** M**ultiplication** A**ddition **S**ubtraction

5 + 5 + 5 – 5 + 5 + 5 – 5 + 5 x 0

5 x 0 = 0 first (Muliplication first)

leaves 5 + 5 + 5 – 5 + 5 + 5 – 5 + **0**

15-15-5 (Addition before subtraction)

Answer = -5

**b) Answer = 15**

**B**rackets **O**rder **D**ivision** M**ultiplication** A**ddition **S**ubtraction

5 + 5 + 5 – 5 + 5 + 5 – 5 + 5 x 0

5 x 0 = 0 first (Muliplication first)

Addition and Subtraction have the same priority, so we operate from left to right

Answer = 15

**c) Youtube answer**

Hi.

I prefer BIDMAS with I for index or indices.

However, I really don’t like these sorts of questions. If the getting the correct answer is important, then it could be rewritten more clearly.

I don’t think there’s ever a situation where the adding comes ‘before’ the subtraction. I think that is one of the misleading things about BIDMAS.

I’m pretty sure I know of a mathematician who would say that multiplication comes before addition. Brackets happen first.

Index, multiplying and division are all types of multiplying. Subtracting is a kind of adding.

What do you think?

I do not think there is a right answer and I totally agree that the question should be clearer, as this is what is causing the debate.

3+3×3-3+3 =

the solution and ONLY soultion is 15. -5 is INCORRECT

The Answer Is Zero

Love this for a ‘minds on math’ engager – to promote inquiry and purposeful talk!

Thanks for the nice comment!

Zero is the only possible answer. A positive number multiplied by zero is zero. A negative number multiplied by zero is also zero. Anything that occurs zero times (times zero), occurs zero times.
